Whaleboat Race Won By Durham’s Cadets The race for the Durham Cup rowed on Lambton harbour on Saturday afternoon was won with a comfortable lead by the cadets of the Federal Steam Navigation Company’s motor-liner Durham from the holders, the Collingwood Sea Scouts. During the time tlie Durham Ims been on the New Zealand coast, her boat's crew has beaten crews representing H.AI.S. Philomel at Auckland, the Nelson Sea Scouts, and the New Plymouth Harbour Board. The cutters’ crews on I’nturday were as follow:— Durham: J. Bryant (coxl. P. 11. Williams (str.), A. 8011, A. Ball, R. Birkin, and I. Norrie. Collingwood Sea Scouts: V. Jacobs (cox), 1). Ak-Gruar (str.), J. Calson, A. Brown, T. Wright, and D. McGruar. Port Nicholson Sea Scouts: N. J. Clarke (cox), V. Butterworth (str.l, A. >Simm, J. Imlack, R. Clarke, and R. AVebb. Tlie Sea Scout crews rowed in the boats formerly belonging to tlie steamer Cornwall, presented to them last year by the New Zealand .Shipping Company, Ltd. On account of the strong northerly wind tlie course was changed from Jerningham Point-Clyde Quay wharf to one starting off tlie southern end of Thorndon breastwork, tlie finishing point being on a line between Clyde Quay and Taranaki Street wharves. Tlie wind raised a fairly good "jobble” on the water. Taking up a leeward position the Durham crew soon gained a good lead and won in fine stylo by 27 seconds from Collingwood, who finished liarel.v a length ahead of Port Nicholson. The competitors and their supporters were entertained nt afternoon tea provided by Hie lads’ mothers in tlie Sen Scouts' hall. The Durham Cup was presented to the winning crew by Captain W. Olphert. D. 5.0.. marine superintendent of the New Zealand Sliipping Company, Ltd., wlm apologised for the unavoidable absence of Air. C. AL Turrell, general manager of the company. Captain Olphert and Mr. F. C. Holmes, donor of tlie Durham , Cup. congratulated tlie crew on their I well-deserved win. Captain 11. L. L'p- 1 ton. D.S.C.. commander of tlie Durham. 1 said his ship's company wore proud of ' their success. lie paid a tribute to the I Collingwood and Port Nicholson crows, | and said the Durhams always looked ; forward Io these truly sporting contests. —————— c i-
