BOULCOTT FARM
Memorial Service at St. James’s Church Sl. James's Church, Lower Hutt, was tilled yesterday morning when the vicar, the Rev. 11. .E. K. Fry, conducted a service commemorating the 90th anniversary of the gallant defence of Bottlcolt Farm. Among those present were the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash ami Airs. Nash, the Alayor of Lower Hutt. Air. J. AV. Andrews and Airs. Andrews, and members of the borough council. The service wns also attended by the 17th Battery, R.F.A., and the Hutt company of the First Battalion. Wellington Regiment. lite Legion of Frontiersmen and the Allen troop of boy scouts. The lessons were read by Major G. IL Cowie and Captain It. J. Wells. .Mr. Fry. in bis address, said that New Zealand had not many historic landmarks. AVe valued such ns we bail. One was the !K)-year-old memorial .-tone standing in tlie churchyard recording the hcro'c efforts of the defenders of Boulcott Farm. He recounted the story of how many brave men had given their lives. The .service they wore they holding was not to glorify war. No one in his senses would do <-o to-day. They hold the service to honour brave men who had died in devotion to duty. He drew the lesson of moral courage so necessary in the life of the Christian soldier. At the conclusion of the address Lt. AlcKain sounded the alarm at the memorial stone, this being followed by the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille, during which the congregation stood in nilence. An impressive service concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and Benediction.
