WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Toa Unlucky Against Swifts RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S MATCHES The second series of matches in the first round of the Wellington women’s hockey competitions were played on Saturday under ideal conditions and on reasonably firm ground*’. The surprise of the day was the magnificent display given by loa, who were unlucky not to have beaten last yearn champion*?, Swift#. No doubt die match will considerably benefit Swifts, who were playing their first game of the season, while their opponents had had a game to help them. College Old Girls gave a brilliant display of combination to beat 5 arsity. Poneke hurt managed to defeat Technical Old Girls (II), while Hutt United did not find Huia very difficult to bent. In the senior B grade Technical Old Girls, Hutt and Wenerei were successful, while St. Joseph’s were lucky to force Upper Hutt to a scoreless draw. C.O.G.’s SECOND WIN College Old Girls proved that their success last week against Technical Old Girls (I) was uo fluke by brilliantly outplaying Varsity iu the second spell at Newtown Park. The actual combination of the forwards, particularly between the right flank- aud centre, and splendid support of the halves made Old Girls the team of the day. In the first half sity, through keen tackling, prevented Ohl Girls from becoming dangerous, and with slightly better team work the students might have led instead of being behind. Varsity’s improvement in this spell was very noticeable compared with the previous week, but the hard, well-judged hitting of Old Girls seemed to tire the students after the resumption, the match developing into brilliant understanding versus a tiring team. Just before the interval Miss 11. Morris, Old Girls centre-forward, slipped a nice one past the Varsity custodian close in after a quick second attempt. Varsity equalised in the early stages of the second spell, Miss'S. Dive, centre-forward, driving in a good shot that puzzled Miss Nielson. Old Girls took the lead per Miss Morris, who shortly afterward secured her third goal. The final goal of the match went to Miss H. McLellan, insideright, who slipped the ball just inside the left goalpost. The match ended in Old Girls winning by 4 goals to 1. Messrs. Allan Roxburgh and S. 1. Toad were the umpires. PONEKE JUST PREVAIL The Poneke-Technical Old Girls (II) match at Kilbirnie was fast from start to finish, and full of good hockey. The Technical team played much better than last Saturday, but Poneke was just a shade better on the attack. Poneke opened the score with 3 fine shot from the stick of Miss J. Rielly, left-wing. From a subsequent corner Miss N. Hogan, Technical, managed to find the ifi)t. _ Poneke made another rush. Mrs. I>. Newton made a fine dash at goal, but the ball hit the goalpost and returned into the field of play. Just before the interval, as the outcome of a corner. Miss N. Hogan equalised for Technical. The second half was particularly exciting. From good stick work in the circle, Technical’s ceutrc, Miss G. Horne, found the net. Almost on top of this the Poneke forwards took the ball downfield and transferred to Miss Rielly, from whose stick came a fine goal. Once again technical made an endeavour to get ahead, but Mrs. Newton took command of the ball and raced downfield, just missing goaliug. Shortly afterward the Poneke forwards attacked and sent the ball out to Miss Rielly, who managed to dribble it past the goalie, the game ending shortly after with Poneke 3, Technical Old Girls (II) 2. Messrs. IV. J. Dredge and S. Brugh were umpires. TOA UNLUCKY Playing their first game of the season, Swifts were not up to the standard of play expected of this combination. Lack of understanding between the players seemed the chief fault. Toa fully extended Swifts, and were unlucky in uot gaining the victory. The first half of the game was very uninteresting, neither side showing much dash. The second half was much improved, and for the most part kept the Swifts full-backs on their toes. Time and time again Miss K. Miller and Miss E. Melndoe saved Swifts from some dangerous positions. Toa seemed overanxious and could not put the finishing touches that were necessary to score. The game ended with Toa on the attack, there being no score. ■Messrs. W. Dredge and S. Brugh were umpires, WIN FOR HUTT UNITED Playing at Woburn, Hutt United had a hard tussle with Huia up to the last quarter, when the Valley team predominated and won in convincing fashion. The first session was very even, both teams netting a goal apiece, Airs. D. Cleverley for United and Miss M. Watson for Huia. Thesecond spell was keenly-contested until United took the lead, and when Huia seemed gradually to lose their strong resistance. Miss J. .McDowell gave United a two goals lead, shortly followed by Mrs. T. Morris making it four. At this stage Huia fell to pieces and United predominated the play. Shortly before time Mrs. Cleverley netted a good goal, making the final account: Hutt United 5, Huia 1. Messrs. A. J. Ross and E. L. Harris were the umpires. SENIOR B GAMES The hockey displayed in the Technical Old Girls-Hospital match at Newtown Park might have been much better than it actually was, but taking into account that several of the players, particularly in the Hospital team, are new to the glime, an excuse is allowed. Although Technical secured a comfortable win, Hospital might have made a close contest. of it had the attacking department used better discretion in the circle. The nurses’ half-line supported the front rank well considering the players are more or less novices, but the full-backs and goalkeeper will improve with experience. Although Technical dominated the play, the ex-students did not show the combination of which they are capable, most of the attacking movements being of the individual type. Technical led by two goals to nil at the interval, Miss M. Broughton doing the scoring. Although Hospital made some desperate efforts to reduce the deficit, Technical's defence played soundly. Miss Broughton netted two more goals, the match ending: Technical Old Girls 4, Hospital 0. Messrs. S. P. Todd and Allan Roxburgh were the umpires. From what could be judged of the ITutt-Poncke encounter at Newtown Park the Hutt team is sure to be among the hardest propositions ill tile grade. Poneke played well, but still needs brushing up in the forward lino, particularly at. goal shooting. Hutt, through wcll-coiicerled movements, secured a two-goals lead in the first spell, Misses G. Gwilliams and 11. King doing the scoring. One of the goals, however, was doubtful. Poneke played well in the second half to hold their opponents, there being no further score, Hutt winning by 2 goals to nil. Messrs. C- Lloyd and 11. Tahiwi were the umpires. . Upper Hutt were unlucky not to gain an outright win over St. Joseph’s at Upper Hutt. The home team showed distinct superiority, but the keen St. Joseph’s tackling, particularly in the defencc, hold the opposition out. In the curlv stages of the match Miss M. M. Baillie netted for St. Joseph’s from a good puss from Miss J t Nunns, but the umpire ruled Miss Baillie outoido the

circle. Upper Hutt strove hard, particularly in the last quarter of the match, to snatch a win, but St. Joseph’s held on tenaciously, and forced a scoreless draw. Mr. 11. Hodder was the umpire. Although three goals down in the opening half, Wesley made a great last-min-ute effort to pull the game out of the fire against Wenerei, at Ntewtown Park, and might have succeeded had the forward line not. been over-anxious near the circle. Wcnerei's three goals in the first spell wore obtained by Misses G. Webb. Rudge and Sinclair, Wesley undergoing a very quiet time. Iloweevr, the changing of ends gave the Wesley team two goals, from Misses V. Miinuns and E. Milidment. Wesley fought, bard to equalise, but luck was against thorn, Wenerei winning by 3 goals to 2. Messrs. 11. ’J’aluwi and C. Lloyd were the umpires. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Junior Grade. —Technical College ~ (Misses Holden nnd J.
