My Pet

I have a new saddle and bridle for Darkie, my horse. One day when we were riding to school he lay down with us. We tried to make him get up. but he wouldn't budge. So we jumped off and pulled him up. When we got on again he bucked and jumped, but I dug my heels into him, and off he galloped. Every night and morning I groom him. I make his black coat shiny and smooth, and comb his mane and tail. He loves carrots, and the thistle-tops. When be sees something good to eat, he snorts and runs away with it in his mouth. But nt school he is very hard to catch, and sometimes I have to walk home, or have n ride on the mail-car. So now I have :>

bobble on him. He eats pollard, too. and cake sometimes. Often when it is wet 1 go on the mail-car, so I send Darki> home by himself. I lead him to the gate and say. “Home. Darkie." and off he goes!—“Swagger Bill (8), Waipawa.
