W.S.P.M. MOVEMENT
The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Women’s Social Progress Movement was held early in the week in the home of Mrs. Alexander Gillies, and was particularly wellattended. Miss McLean. president, opened the meeting with a devotional session.
Mrs. G. L. Stewart and Miss Bicknell presented a progress report of the “Home Assistant” scheme, which is to be inaugurated by the educational authorities when the new home science department of the Technical College is completed.
All present were keenly Interested, and expressed their satisfaction that an earnest endeavour is at last being made to raise the status and increase the efficiency of domestic workers. Hope was expressed that the welfare of Maori girls would be considered in any progressive scheme put forward by either the educational authorities or social workers. Leave of absence was granted Mrs. Purdie, ' who intends spending a holiday in the north. Arrangements were made to entertain Mrs. Purdie and Mrs. J. C. Andersen at morning tea. When this was done, a small presentation was made to both ladies, and beautiful floral sprays were handed to them with the good wishes of all present. Miss McLean spoke on behalf of the movement, and expressed the hope that the change of climate and jneeting with new and old friends would bring great happiness to the travellers. Mrs. Andersen and Mrs. Purdie thanked members for their hearty good wishes.
After washing lace, muslin or silk, a lump of sugar put into the last rinsing water will give just the right amount of stiffness. If added to the water used for washing oilcloth, or linoleum, a lump of sugar will help to give it a brilliant and lasting polish. When linoleum is shabby a few lumps added to the water will brighten up the colours.—
