PLAZA THEATRE

“Gentle Julia” Jane Withers has the most important role of her stage career when she plays in “Gentle Julia,” a Fox film version of Booth Tarkington’s funniest story, now screening at the Plaza Theatre. It is an hilarious, mirthful story of a mischievous little vixen who turns her hand to patching up romance, with questionable results. Versatile and lovable, Jane will be remembered for her part in “Ginger,” but she is even more likeable in “Gentie Julia.” Jackie Searl. her madcap partner in “Ginger,” is with her. The scenes are sot in a sleepy, mid-west town before the war, where Marsha Hunt, who plays the title role, is besieged on all sides by eligible young men. and is simply unable to turn any of them down. The atmosphere is made more realistic by the bouffant frocks of that period. In the time he can spare from her personal feud with Jackie Searl, Jane makes sporadic attempts to aid the cause of Tom Brown in pursuit of her aunt. Marsha Unnt. Jane and Tom plot a bunch of crazy stratagems that sometimes succeed, but more often get them into trouble. The picture ends happily, when Jane saves her Aunt Julia from Mr. Crump, a suave city product, who almost succeeded in marrying her. PRINCE EDWARD & KING GEORGE The latest opera star to fall beneath the spell of the Kleig lights, is Lily Pons, the diminutive French , soprano, whose glorious voice has been given to the world in the film. ”1 Dream Too Much.” which comes to the Prince Edward theatre. Petone, and the King George, Lower Hutt this evening. Miss Pons's voice is heard to great advantage in several beautiful arias, notably the “Bell Song,” from the opera “Lakme.” and Jerome Kern has written some lighter numbers which are also splendidly presented.
