The New Party
Sir, —The formation of a timv National Party is desirable fur obvious reasons, /.part from political opinions, it is extremely desirable io have a (Strong Opposition when a Government in power possesses a preponderating majority. At the same time, the country ns a whole desires that Ibe present. Government receive a reasonable chance before passing judgment. I'nlike the ForbesCoates Government, Ihe Labour Government has given a good example in “business first” methods in tho House, and put its predecessors to shame in many respects. It is also not afraid to embark on bold measures, ami, what is more important, it possesses sympathy with tlie general masses —which the Forbes-Coates Government never possessed, nor desired to exhibit.
1 have never previously voted for Labour. but did so last election, as I am convinced of its honesty of purpose’. If antagonistic fiiiancial interests attempt to thwart its aims by unfair methods, you ean take it from me that the general mass of the electors will resent it and support the present. Government in any counter measures. On the other hand, if. after given a fail’ opportunity, Labour fails, then it will he replaced by a new National I’ariy, but in this case such a party must: have an entirely new.leader, for any further connection with its previous leaders will, politically speaking, of course, simply irritate electors from one cud of the Dominion to the other, and end in a fiasco. The result of last election clearly indicated public sentiment in the matter. —I am. etc., UNPREJUDICED ELECTOR. Wellington, May 15.
