CIVIC AFFAIRS

Wellington City Council An appeal to the electricity committee to consider an alteration in the basis of compiling the minimum electric charges for houses to meet the circumstances of residents in flats and houses under five rooms, was made at the meeting of the Wellington City Council last night by Cr. P. Butler. He contended that the five-room basis was unfair to those in smaller houses. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, undertook to have the suggestion considered by the committee. A recommendation by the committee that there should be no charge on the. tramways department for the lighting of streets used by trams was contested by Cr. Butler and Cr. L. McKenzie, who contended that the domestic consumer should not have to bear the whole load. The Mayor said there was no reason why the tramway department should pay for street lighting which it had not asked for and did not need, and Cr. H. A. Huggins said it was the duty of the city and not one of its departments to light the streets. The clause was referred back to the committee for further consideration. The tramways, electricity and street light committee reported having received deputations from the Lambton Quay Area Association regarding the street lighting system in Lambton Quay; from the Wellington Automobile Association concerning improvements at the corner of Aloxham Avenue and Tnurima Street; from the employees at Kilbirnie workshops regarding restoration of reduction in wages. These matters were receiving attention.’ The public health committee reported that a deputation was received from representatives of the Wellington Live Stock"Butchers’ Association, accompanied by members of the Wellington Master Butchers’ Industrial Union of Employers, urging the provision of a chiller at the municipal abattoir.
