HUTT VALLEY NEWS

STREET-WIDENING NEGOTIATIONS Reported Agreement Denied Negotiations undertaken by the Lower Hutt Borough Council to secure a strip of land to widen Wainui Road were referred to at a meeting of the council on Monday night, when the Mayor (Mr. J. W Andrews) read a letter written to the owner of the land’ (Mr. D. S. Patrick) by the late borough engineer (Mr. A. G. Bush). The letter was reported as “setting out conditions on the fulfilment of which Mr. Patrick promised to let the council have land for road widening free of cost,” and the Mayor subsequently stated that while these conditions had been carried out by the council, Mr. Patrick had not carried out his part. Yesterday a copy of the late Mr. Bush s letter to Mr. Patrick was shown to “The Dominion.” It was dated six years ago, on March IS, 1930, and it is clear from the contents of the letter that the whole question of the council obtaining land for street widening was in course of negotiation and that no agreement had been arrived at. On the face of this letter there could be no grounds for the allegation that Mr. Patrick had let the council down or failed to carry out any obligation.
