FREE STATE SURPLUS
Tax Reductions Follow Dublin, May 12. The Finance Minister, Mr. Sean McEntee, in his Budget speech, said that the surplus of £322,000 would be divided between relief of taxation, including jd. a pound off the sugar tax, abolition of the tax of 10/- per cental on wool and wool waste, abolition of the cattle and sheep levies, an increase in the children’s allowance from £5O to £6O, and a reduction in the tax on the lower-priced cinema seats. The Government would contribute £1,750,000 to relieve unemployment by means of construction of airports and harbours and public health works, local authorities contributing £750,000. The National Debt was £28,854,000, compared with £22.373,000 when Mr. de Valera assumed office. The country’s finances were sound and spending power had been increased. Income tax and the property tax rose by £500,000.
