MINISTER NOT GOING

Agricultural Conference at Canberra “TIME FULLY OCCUPIED” A definite announcement that the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Leg Martin, would not be able to attend the coming Australian Agricultural Conference at Canberra was made last night by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Some time ago, the Commonwealth Government issued an invitation for the Dominion to be represented at the conference by the Minister and the Director-General of Agriculture, but their presence is required in New Zealand to deal w’iih matters arising from the Government’s legislative policy. “We greatly appreciated the Australian Government’s invitation,” the Prime Minister said, “but we have had to point out that we have our time fully occupied with domestic matters of great importance. Although we realise the value ot such visits, we are unable to spare either Mr. Lee Martin or the Director-General of his department, Mr. A. H. Cockayne, at the moment. “However; we have communicated with the Australian Government with a request that the New Zealand Trade Commissioner, Mr. W. Taylor, should be able to attend the conference. This suggestion has been agreed to, and Mr. Taylor will be able to report to us on important matters as questions of mutual interest to Australia and New Zealand will doubtless be discussed.”
