SHOPS AND OFFICES
Auckland Views on New Bill Dominion Special Service. Auckland, May 13. Opinion in Auckland as to the effects of the proposed Shops and Offices Amendment Bill as introduced in Parliament last night is somewhat varied. When interviewed to-day several city employers expressed indignation at the haste with which the Bill is being rushed through the House. Their representatives have to state their case before the Labour Bills Committee tomorrow, and they contend that sufficient time has not been given them to collect aud consider evidence. They state that prices and the cost of living will rise.
On tlie other hand, clerks and Labour officials stated that “elastic" hours would have to end. In the past exemptions under the old Act covered a wide range, while under the proposed Act the definition of “an offence" had been much widened. The Bill, it was stated, would give the same protection to the office worker as to the shop assistant. Hours would henceforth be under legislative control and not at the pleasure of employers.
