TOWN AND COUNTRY
Correspondence School Pupils Entertained Seldom have town and country met and mingled so pleasantly as at the social gathering held at Clifton Terrace on Tuesday evening when the parents, pupils and ex-pupils of the correspondence school were entertained by. the staff in connection with the school’s present exhibition of work. Mrs. Peter Fraser, Dr. J. IV. Mcllraith and Mrs. A. G. Butchers were among the guests of the evening. The old Clifton Terrace School, now the headquarters of the Education Department’s Correspondence School, has been the sceen of many joyous gatherings, but Tuesday night’s entertainment had something unique to offer. To be convinced of this, one had only to peep into the crowded social room where more than 200 adults and children watched with delight a variety of 16 m.m. class-room films. This was no ordinary “movie” audience; for some young, rapt faces bore eloquent testi- | mouy to the fact that this was their first introduction to pictures. Between the screenings of pictures, items were given by members of the correspondence school staff, a few hilarious minutes being provided by the reading of A. A. Milne’s lively play, “The Man in the Bowler Hat,” with the following cast: Miss Breen, Mr. Watson, Mr. Bush, Miss Beckway, Mr. Bogren and Mr. Bright. Another mem.her of the staff, Miss Davies, contributed songs which were also greatly appreciated. The evening’s hilarity reached its full height when the headmaster, Dr. A. G. Butchers, asked the audience to indicate, by show of hands, which they should prefer for a final item—a quarter-hour film on the iron industry or a half-hour “Laurel and Hardy.” The result of the voting need scarcely be recorded.
Supper ended a most successful evening' and offered opportunities for further social intercourse between teachers and parents and pupils of the school, and for a further strengthening of the bonds already established by the pen. «
