Motor Taxation

Sir,—ln re the suggested reorganisation of motor taxation, mentioned in your issue of to-day: While admitting that the present system of levying motor taxation under different headings such as tire tax, petrol tax, etc., may be cumbersome, it has the great advantage that the user pays. The person who operates car or lorry every day pays a greater share of taxation than the owner who ouly uses bis vehicle for pleasure at week-ends, etc. It seems to me that to group all this taxation under the one heading of petrol tax would drive the driver of the. pleasure car completely off the road. No doubt the Labour Government feels an urge t<> alter things, but in this, case, when a system of taxation which is at least fair to all has been built up with the growth of motor traffic, it' would be wise to go slowly until a substitute scheme equally fair to all can be evolved—l am, etc., PRIVATE CAR. Otaki. May 12.
