NEW OIL BARGE

Welded Steel Vessel at Patent Slip For some mouths a craft of unusual aspect and build has been under construction at the Wellington Patent Slip. It is destined to serve a similar purpose to tho hulks that lie at moorings in the stream, or are moved about the harbour by tugs—fuel storehouses for the shipping of the port. Built for the Union Steam Ship Company, the barge is mainly remarkable because it is a pioneer example of local welded-steel construction. It measures 170 feet in length, 33 feet in beam, and 13 feet from bilge to gunwale. It will be divided into ten compartments, and pumps for handling the oil will be situated aft. The vessel will carry 1200 tons of oil, with additional storage space for fuel and provisions for the caretaker who will live aboard her. No means of propulsion will be installed, the vessel being, like other hulks, dependent on tugs for movement. She is. expected wb be finished about July. I
