OLD AGE PENSIONS

Australia Will Not Ratify Reciprocal Agreement Canberra, May 13. Speaking in Committee of Supply, an Independent Labour member, Mr. M. Blackburn, urged the Government to ratify the reciprocal old age pension agreement of 1913, which was ratified in that year by the New Zealand Government. He pointed out that the present New Zealand Government, when in opposition, was extremely anxious that the agreement should be ratified. It provides for residence for a period of years in either place being taken into account when claiming a pension. The Treasurer, Mr. R. G. Casey, later indicated that there is not a remote hope of the agreement being ratified, owing to the financial burden that is likely to be involved.
