COUNTY CRICKET IN ENGLAND
Leyland’s 263 For Yorkshire London, May 12. In the series of county cricket matches which was completed to-day, Leyland was the outstanding batsman, making 263 for Yorkshire against Essex. Worthington made 174 for Derbyshire, and James Langridge contributed 167 to Sussex’s total. Centuries were also made by Fishlock (Surrey), Keeton (Nottinghamshire), Martin (Worcestershire), Paynter (Lancashire). K. C. James, the former Wellington player, made 8S for Northamptonshire. Prominent among the bowlers was It. E S. Wyatt (Warwickshire), who took five wickets for 44 runs and five for 89 against Middlesex. Results are:— Middlesex v. Warwickshire. —Middlesex, 150 (Allen 57 not out; Wyatt five for 44) and 2SO (Covington 83; Wyatt five for 89). Warwickshire, 213 (Sims four for 38) and 218 for nine wickets (Smith six for 37). Warwickshire won by one wicket. Surrey v. Gloucestershire. —Surrey, 229 (Holmes 79; Goddard five for 79) and 338 for eight, declared (Holmes 94. Fishlock 133'not out). Gloucestershire, 174 and HO (Gover five for 40). Surrey won by 274 runs. Yorkshire v. Essex.—Yorkshire, 454 (Leyland 263, Hutton 83). Essex, 219 (Taylor 87; Verity five for 48) and, following on, 180 for seven wickets (Nichols 77). Yorkshire won on the first innings. Nottinghamshire V. Sussex.—Nottinghamshire, 408 for eight, declared (Keeton 103) and 160 for six (Hardstaff 50). Sussex, 384 (James Langridge 167). Nottinghamshire won on the first innings. Hampshire v. Worcestershire.— Hampshire, 365 (Paris 83) and 173 (Perks live for7l, Howorth five for 71). Worcestershire, 290 (Martin 103) and 135 for seven wickets. Hampshire wou on the first innings. Northamptonshire v. Lancashire.— Northamptonshire, 244 (James 88) and 160 (Allen 87). Lancashire, 371 for seven wickets, declared (Paynter 132 not out) and 35 for two wickets. Lancashire won by eight wickets. Derbyshire v. Oxford University,— Derbyshire. 456 (Worthington 174). Oxford, 153 (Mitchell-Innes 67 not out; Copson four for 14) and, following on, 173. Derbyshire won by an innings and 130 runs. INDIANS BEATEN Somerset Wins by Nine Wickets London May 12. Somerset defeated the touring Indian cricket team by nine wickets. Scores are:— Somerset, 496 and 89 for one wicket. India, 228 and 356 (Naidu 6S, Merchant 151; Welland, six for 52).
