WIN FOR R. AITKEN
Joyce Beaten in Brisk Boxing Contest Dealing out severe punishment witii a most effective right, Ralph Aitken, Newtown, list. 041 b., defeated Jerry Joyce, JI int m nr, fist., in the ninth round of an exciting professional featherweight boxing ‘ contest at I’etone last night. Aitken had the better of tin; match from tlie start, and only in two of tlie early rounds did Joyce break even. At the stage when the contest was stopped Aitken had a substantial lead on pointe. Joyce revealed a splendid left, Cut failed to use his right to very good purpose. The match, whicli was promoted by the Hutt Valley Boxing Association, was tlie first professional match staged at I’etone for some years, and drew a disappointing house. Tlie bout opened quietly, both boxers exchanging a few blows to tlie face. Aitken was making tlie pace, going in witii lefts, which lie followed up well with hooks with his right. Many of Joyces blows were wasted, through Aitken smothering effectively. Aitken again adopted the same tactics in the early part of the third round by going in and then smothering. The latter part of the round saw a lively exchange; Aitken getting t.ie better of matters. Joyce appeared fresher when they came out from their corners in tlie next round and did most of tlie leading. Joyce was attempting to counteract iiie opponents smother by knocking his gloves down and following in. Botli traded blows freely in the fifth. Aitken scoring heavily with his right. .Must of the boxing in the following round was at long range. When Joyce forced Aitken on to the ropes he was the aggressor, but Aitken fought back strongly toward the end. Clever work by Aitken saw Joyce missing badly in tlie seventh. At long range Aitken did most of tlie leading and again scored heavily with his right. At this stage Aitken was well ahead on points. , _ At tlie opening of the eighth, Joyce came in strongly, and produced a barrage of lefts. Aitken fought back gamely and sent Joyce down for the count of four with a beautiful right hook to tl|P jaw. ’When Joyce crawled to his feet Aitken came in strongly to floor his opponent again, only the gong saving him. Obviously still feeling the effects of the severe punishment lie had taken in the previous round, Joyce was sluggish when he left his corner for the ninth. Aitken maintained a heavy attack, using both hands effectively. Joyce was again sent to the mat before the round had progressed far. and though he made an attempt to climb to his feet, the referee awarded the fight to Aitken. Mr. T. Tracy was the referee.
