GIRLS’ HOCKEY DRESS

—o,—, — New Rule Adopted Girls playing hockey are to be allowed further latitude in drees by a decision of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association yesterday. They may wear skirts or tunics, but not divided skirts, and short stockings may be worn, except with tunics, when long stockings must be worn. The decision of the conference was to adopt the English rule, but not to allow divided skirts, which are allowed in England when they are of approved pattern. The secretary, Mrs. J. H. Poulter, introduced the subject by pointing out that the English rules now gave New Zealand greater scope. Players were now allowed to wear skirts, tunics or divided skirts, but long stockings were necessary with tunics. The English association had informed the New Zealand association that the rule was made primarily for, players in the English climate, and New Zealand could do what it liked, more or less, except that long stockings should be worn with tunics. Hitherto, stockings had not been mentioned in the rules. The association had always insisted on long stockings with tunics. Skirts, blouse and long stockings were the wear in the international games of the world, - but on the Continent players wore football stockings, almost knee-high, in club games. The chairman, Mr. H. Throp (Canterbury), referred to the difliculty of seeing the colours of a tunic uniform. Coloured stockings were the solution, but girls were averse to wearing brightly-coloured' stockings. Mr. L. S. P. Butcher (Ashburton) moved that affiliated associations be directed to use their discretion within the English rule. This was carried with an amendment prohibiting' divided skirts, moved by Mrs. G. Nelson (Otago), who said that if divided skirts were allowed there would be great lack of uniformity in it. The amended motion was carried.
