TRADE DEVELOPMENT

Policy Under Consideration An indication of the Government’s overseas trade policy, in view of the fact that, the Ottawa agreement terminates this year, was sought by Mr. W. J. Polson (Opposition, Stratford) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Prime Minister, Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage, replied that the question of the development of overseas trade was under the consideration of the Government, but it was not possible at the present juncture to indicate the general lines of its policy or to indicate the extent to which the making of trade agreements would play a part in that policy. In answer to other points raised by Mr. Polson, the Prime Minister said the Ottawa agreement was not intended to prevent the reasonable economic development of any of the countries which were parties to it. The action taken by the Government in regard to the wheat-growing, flourmilling and bread-baking industries was consequently not contrary to the spirit and purpose of the agreement. The opportunity would be given to the House later io discuss the Government’s general policy in relation to overseas trade development. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Measures Received From Lower House Two measures received from tht House of Representatives were read a first, time in the legislative Council yesterday afternoon. They were the Labour Department Amendment Bill and the Employment Promotion Bill. The main business of the day was the further consideration of the .Alsatian Dog Bill, which was put through the committee stage, read a third time, and passed, all within an hour.
