STATE MARKETING OF DAIRY PRODUCTS
Income and Security for the Farmer DEBATE ON POLICY OF GUARANTEED PRICES Opposition to Fight the Bill Every Inch of the Way After a colourless afternoon discussing Ministerial replies to questions in the House of Representatives yesterday and some attention to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, members were raised to a high level of political interest in the evening when a start was made with the second reading of the Primary Products Marketing Bill, which provides for State ccntrol of dairy produce marketing and the payment of a guaranteed price to producers. The: galleries were crowded long before the debate was opened by the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash, who spoke for an hour and was warmly applauded by the Government party for his clear, and vigorous speech. A brisk attack on the Government’s marketing policy was made by the former Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (Opposition, Kaipara), who described the measure as a “pirating Bill on a stupendous scale.” He announced in the course of his hour’s speech that the Opposition would fight the Bill every inch of the way. The debate was continued by Mr. H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson), who was followed' by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, who had been felicitously congratulated by Mr. Coates on his elevation to the Privy Council. All the speeches were broadcast.
