BRIGHTER FUTURE
Masterton Racing Club’s Position Dominion Special Service. Masterton, March 20. A statement that the club was now in the best position it had been in for several years was made at a special meeting of members of the Masterton Racing Club last night, when a motion to reduce the number of stewards from fourteen to eight was lost. In the opinion of most of I members, the carrying of such a motion would not have been in the best interests of the club, which appeared to have a much brighter future ahead. Another proposal, that the president, two vice-presidents, and fourteen stewards at present holding office all retire on June 30 next, was, however, carried unanimously. The club's position, which was stated to have been progressive during the past twelve months, and not backward as rumours had stated, was explained by Mr. N. G. F. Whiteman, who said that a satisfactory profit had been made on the annual meeting. He said the club had an overdraft nt the bank, guaranteed by four members, three of whom had died, and the bank, while not actually calling up the overdraft, had said that if the estates were to continue bearing the liability, the bank would have to have their consent. Finally the four guarantors had decided to pay up the overdraft of £l3OO. which was a very generous action. The appeal had been successful, and the bant: had offered to provide the club with an overdraft limit o( £3OO, unsecured by any guarantee. The club’s only liability now was a mortgage of £3OOO over the course and buildings at Opaki. The club now had every chance of prospering. There was some £250 in hand to carry on until the next meeting, and with the. whole-hearted co-operation of members Mr. Whiteman felt that the club would never look back. Moving that the number of stewards be reduced from 14 to 8, Mr. W. Hearn Smith said that experience had shown that there was more chance of co-opera-tion with a smaller committee. Members were at variance as to the advisability of taking this course, but the general opinion was that it would be a big mistake to make any reduction at present. The motion was lost by 14 votes to 8, and a subsequent motion that all stewards holding office should retire on June 30 next was carried unanimously. PAHIATUA NOMINATIONS FIRST DAY.
