FEARED SERIOUS
Damage to Oil Tanker Brisbane, March 6. It is now feared that the Norwegian tanker Vardaas, which struck a reef at Point Danger, 70 miles south of Brisbane, has been seriously damaged. The seepage from the cargo of 11,000 tons of crude oil has become more pronounced, and efforts are being made to get it under control. The pilot. Mr. J. Friend, who joined the Vardans at Thursday Island, states that terrible weather was encountered on the way down the Queensland coast, with heavy hail, high seas, and bad visibility, making it impossible to sight Point Danger. The Vardaas at about 6 a.m. crashed square on the reef. She rose with the high seas and was dumped on the rocks, then rose again and was deposited in deep water on the other side of the reef. Afterward she crawled 70 miles to shelter at Cape Moreton. The majn damage occurred about 80 feet from the bows, the hull being buckled outward and several plates split
The question whether the Variaas can be'brought up the Brisbane river will he decided by a Lloyd’s surveyor to-day.
