HOME THOUGHTS Far away across the ocean Lies my home of other days; I’m an exile here in London, And I’m tired of city ways. Miles in hundreds lie between us, Separate me from my home; Continents nad countries famous, Miles of dashing ocean foam. In New Zealand’s lovely islands There’s a homestead on a hill, With tlie native bush around it, King.ng witli the tin’s trill. People tell me I am favoured With a happy holiday; They little know how 1 am yearning Yearning, yes. to be away From the clamour and the bustle, , To the peace, of country life: Sweeter far-the bellbird’s music Than the voice of lute or life. Once I had desires to travel. See tlie wonders of this earth. Nothing now will satisfy me Rut tl>e country of my birth. When the foreign mail is opened. I devour it with delight. Linger long by burning candies, Through the busy London night. As the traffic, ever moving, Hums and rears from every street low different from the country’s silence, Broken by a far sheep’s bleat. Or a morepork’E distant echo. In a bush-glade quiet and still. Or a rustle in the branches Of a tree upon a hill. Or the whisper of 'the needles In the pines along (he lane. Take away till England's marvels. Give me back my heme again. —Original, by Beryl Wall (1~). Mareatotara.
