REPLACING WINGATUI

New Vessel For Union Company Some months ago the Union Company announced that it intended to replace the Wingatui in the Auckland-Welling-ton-South Island cargo service by a modern motor-ship, for which plans were then being prepared. Yesterday the company announced that the plan-’ and specifications had been completed and that tenders would be called immediately in Great Britain for the new vessel. The new ship will be somewhat similar in size and speed to the Waimarino. She will be 320 ft. long between perpendiculars, will have a moulded breadth of 48ft., and a moulded depth of 26ft. 6in. Her deadweight capacity will be 3850 tons on a draft of 19ft. 6ln. The new’ vessel will, embody a number of modern features designed to facilitate the handling of cargo, There will be three holds, each with ’tween decks. Two five-ton derricks will be placed at each end of each hatch, giving six sets of gear, in addition to which a heavy lift derrick with a capacity of 20 tons will be provided. The hatchways are large, their dimensions being 45ft. 6in. by 16ft. each. By these means it is aimed to obtain maximum efficiency in all classes of cargo, including motor-vehicles. An average speed of 12 knots in service is a condition of the contract. Modern accommodation amidships will be provided for officers and crew.
