NEW ZEALAND TENNIS TEAM BEATEN

Juniors Outclassed By New South Wales

INADEQUACY OF SYDNEY ARRANGEMENTS By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received March 1, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, March 1. Failing in some instances to strike real form, the New Zealand junior tennis representatives were outclassed by New South Wales players in a series of matches played at the White City courts yesterday. The New Zealanders won only one game out of 13. Surprisingly inadequate arrangements were made by the Tennis Association, while a small attendance and heavy courts due to overnight thunderstorms were factors not .conducive to a good display. No umpires had been provided, and spectators volunteered, but in two instances the boys umpired and scored themselves until volunteers came to the rescue.

The games were more evenly contested than the scores indicate. The value of early ■oaching was demonstrated in the . me team’s knowledge of finer points. "Beaten, but not disgraced,” -was the opinion formed by onlookers regarding the New Zealand display. The visitors showed up better in the doubles. Bedford failed to reveal his true form against Bromwich, though, by clever variation of play in the second set, when he discarded his long-driving game, he rallied splendidly. Partnered by Gunn in the doubles, his placements were clever and his net play and volleying sound. Gunn’s forehand shots were a feature of his play all day. The latter was also most impressive in the singles. Most of the New Zealanders revealed a disinclination to visit the net, and, while their baseline play was sound, the better stroke-mak-ing and superior placings of the local players triumphed. The 14-year-old Wellington boy, Painter, gave flashes of real tennis ability and evidence of great promise. Results, New South Wales names mentioned first, are:— Singles.
