TRAINING COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Mr. F. C. Lopdell, M.A. APPOINTMENT MADE BEFORE EXPECTED Though it was stated on Wednesday bv the secretary of the Wellington Education Board, Mr. E. S. Hylton, that an appointment to the position of principal at the Wellington Teachers Training College would probably not be made until late next week, the name of Mr. F. C. Lopdell, M.A., has now been announced. An article m “The Dominion” two days ago drew atten tion to the delay that had occurred m completing a staff for tbe college, which is to be reopened on Monday, but since then Ministerial consideration of the board's selection has been advanced more rapidly than Mr. Hylton expected would be possible. The Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, has now approved the appointment of both principal and vlee-prin-cipal. They are: Mr. F. C. Lopdell, M.A., principal, at present vice-principal of the Auckland Teachers’ Training College. Mr. F. L. Combs, M.A., vice-principal, at present headmaster of Miramar South Schoo], Wellington. Those other members of the staff whose appointment has been approved were announced in “Tbe Dominion’ on Thursday, The college will open on Mouuay with, about 200 students, drawn from Wellington, Wanganui, Marlborough, and a few. from Nelson. Until rhe principal is in attendance they will take a course in physical training, Mr. H. E. Longworth and Miss H. Taylor, departmental officers, having been attached to the college for the purpose of giving such instruction. Arrangements have now to be madefor releasing Mr. Lopdell and Mr. Combs from their present duties, and though they will not be able to take up their new appointments from the reopening of the college, efforts are being made to facilitate their transfer. The reopening of the college- has been responsible for several changes in the staffing of Wellington schools, Kelburn School, which is opposite the Training College, having been i econstituted a normal school. Air. O. A. Banner, headmaster of Lyall Bay School for a. number of years, was appointed headmaster of Kelburn Normal School, and Mr. J. H. M. Finlayson, headmaster of Kelburn School, was transferred to a similar position at Berbampore School whose headmaster, Mr. C. Robertson, has been promoted to the inspectorate, with headquarters at Auckland. Air. Banner will take up his new duties on Afonday. An appointment to the position which will be left vucant by the transfer of Air. Combs has ye. t 0 be made. Students who will attend the training college have been finding accommodation for the last few weeks. Those who do not have to live away from their usual place of residence will be paid £7O a year, and those who have to find board will be allowed £lOO, according to a decision of Cabinet. An official reopening of the college will probably be arranged after Mr. Lopdell has taken up his appointment.
