N.Z. A Grade Championship WOOLSTON SECOND AND ST. HILDA THIRD By Telegraph—Press Association. New Plymouth, February 28. The Cairns Citizens’ Band, Australia, won the New Zealand brass bands’ A grade championship with the second test to-night, with Woolston second and St. Kilda third. Timaru, which was placed first on the first test on Wednesday night, was in fourth place. The success of the Cairns band after its long journey was popular with the crowd of 4000. The test piece to-night was a selection from Liszt arranged by Rimmer. Solo instrumental sections decided during the day resulted as follow: — Bass Trombone Solo (“Happy Memories’’),. —B. Ridinond (Kalkorai), 88 pointe, 1; J. Patterson (Nelson Garrison), 80 points, 2; W. Garvin (Timaru Municipal), 79, 3. Flugel Tenor So|o (“Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still”).—R. Ward (Wellington Boys’ Institute). 96 points, 1; E. Ormrod (Port Nicholson Silver), 94, 2; L. Fitzsimmons (Port Nicholson Silver), 84, 3. Players under 17 years (any instrument).—E. Smith (Timaru). cornet, 90 points, 1; E. Fleetwood (Whakatane), cornet, 88 pointe, 2; D. Smith (Timaru), trombone, 85 points, 3. D, Smith was also first in the solo other than cornet.
