ANTI-GAS SCHOOL
House of Commons Grant OPPOSITION BY LABOUR (Received February 28, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 27. A lively debate took place in the House of Commons when Labourites opposed a grant of £BOOO for an antigas school asked for by the Home Office for training fire brigades, police, ambulance corps and Red Cross members.
Mr. W. Ormsby-Gore, First Commissioner of Works, said that a suitable house in the centre of 240 acres of land had been found in Gloucestershire, where the work could safely be carried on. z
Mr. C. G. Ammon (Lab., North Camberwell) argued that the vote was likely to mislead the people into believing that there was some defence in preparing against gas, also that war was inevitable.' Mr. B. Bracken (Con., North Paddington) described the opposition as an instance of Labourites’ futile stupidity. Mr. Edward Williams (Lab., Ogmore) said that to make the measures effective every man, woman and child and even cattle must be fitted with gas masks.
The vote was carried by 235 votes to 114.
