National Council of Women

Tlie M'ellington branch of rhe National Council of M’omeu held the first meeting of the year this week. I here was a full attendance of members, Mrs. Peryman, vice-president, being in tlie chair, in the absence of the presb dent. Mrs. Chatfield, who is away on sick leave, and with whom.a vote of sympathy was passed. A pair of handsome autographed portraits of Lord and Lady Aberdeen, which had been presented to tlie council by Mrs. M'liters, were on view and a letter from the University M’ouien’s Club was read by the secretary granting permission for the portraits to be hung in tlie club’s rooms. A vote of thanks was passed to tlie university women for their kind action. \ A visitor to the council was Mrs. Hobkirk, who brought greetings from Hie Edinburgh branch of the N.C.M'.. and spoke of tlie work of tlie sister society in Edinburgh and also of the work of Lady Aberdeen who has done so much for women’s interests as president of tlie International Council of M’omen.

A most interesting address was also given to tlie members by Dr. A. G. Butchers, M.A., a distinguished educationist, Dr. Butchers took as the theme of his talk, “Tlie M’ork of tlie Correspondence Schools.” He was accorded a vote of thanks for his remarks.
