SMITH FAMILY APPEAL

A Generous Response The appeal made by the Smith Family in “The Dominion” this week resulted in a very generous response,, according to the secretary of the family, and will result in considerable assistance being made available for those in need. “The supply, of course, by no means exceeds the demand —it never does,” said the Smith Family secretary yesterday, “and we still have urgent need for the articles appealed for —namely, clothing, footwear, furniture, books for the travelling library. A new system of collecting goods is now operating, calls being made in the suburban districts on different days of the week.’’

The appeal for a harmonium to enable church services to be held iu one of the Unemployment Board’s mining camps resulted in a very suitable instrument being provided, and this is being dispatched to the camp next week.

As an illustration of the work being done by the family the secretary said that no doubt most people had read in the newspapers of the unfortunate plight of a family whose household possessions were being transported to Wellington from New Plymouth on a motor-lorry which caught fire, the result being that the whole of the contents of the lorry, including not only furniture, but also practically all the clothing of the family, was destroyed. The Smith Family, in conjunction with the Hospital Board authorities, was called upon to provide for these unfortunate people, and largely as a - suit of the generous response to this week’s appeal in “The Dominion,” it was found possible to set these people up again with a modestly-fuTnished home. “It is such cases as these,” said the secretary, “and they are not uncommon, which make a heavy demand upon whatever goods the family has on hand, and no matter how generous the public may he there is never a time when the family has more goods than it can dispose of to really necessitous people.” ■ ■ ■ ■
