OPEN TOURNAMENTS
“Why Not In /Tennis?”
A plea for open tennis tournaments, as in golf, where professionals could participate on an equal footing with amateurs, was made at last night’s meeting of the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, by the Dominion president, Professor F, PWilson.
Referring to the present visit of Henri (,'oehet, Professor Wilson asked whether the strict distinction between professionals and amateurs could not be broken down. He could see no real and valid reason for the maintenance of the distinction. The two mixed together in other sports, notably in golf, why not in tennis? He thought perhaps it might be a good thing for the N.Z.L.T.A. to be the first to hold an open championship tournament, as was done in golf. Why, he asked, should tennis stand outside other sports in tills respect. ■ “I think,” he added, “it might be well if-tills association were to give a lead. It might be a voice crying - in tho wilderness, and yet it might be heard.”
