UNIFORMITY OF RULES
Rugby Conference Effort
Melbourne, February 10.
Mr. S. S.' Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union Management Committee, returned last night from the Imperial Rugby Conference in London. Tie said that a permanent committee had been set up to insure uniform rules, the membership being two for each Dominion, and six for the English Rugby Union. .An application had been made on behalf of New Zealand and Australia for continuance of the kick-into-touch rule. It was proposed that an Australian team should tour New Zealand this year, South Africa sending a team to Australia and New Zealand in 1937, and an English team coming out in 1940. Commenting on the growth of Rugby in Victoria, Mr. Dean said it would never oust the Australian game, but there would be room for the two side by side, as Rugby was the only truly amateur football ever played. “I look forward to the time when Rugby will be played as a competitive sport between the Victorian public schools,’’ he said.
