COUNCIL STAFF WAGES
No Restoration of 10 Per Cent. “The majority of councillors are in favour of restoring the 10 per cent, cut to the staff, but then have not pluck enough to do it,” declared Cr. P. Dowse at the meee'n.< ol- me Lower Hutt Borough Council last night, after a motion of his to restore the cuts had been defeated. It was finally decided on the suggestion of Cr. M. Macaskill that the question be the first to be reviewed when the estimates were being considered. Cr. W. Cole, who said he was entirely against Cr. Dowse’s motion, considered the first thin«x to <lo was reduce the rates. It seemed to him, he said, that those who brought thj§ question up were trying to curry favour among other people. That was unfair and unjust. Cr. Macaskill said he did not think the borough had made sufficient steps toward prosperity to warsant the restoration at the present time. To show the difficulties of the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrew’s, pointed out that in 1928 93 per cent, of the rates struck were collected, whereas this year the percentage was 75.74.
