MASPORT CUP

Pelorus Jack Wins Again By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim. January 23. The Masport Cup speed-boat race resulted : —Pelorus Jack 1, Hiss Ethel 2, Tory Chick 3. Time, 20min. 29sec. Pelorus Jack made no race of it in retaining the cup, all but lapping Miss , Ethel 111 of Wanganui and Tory Chick, which were the only other boats to finish. Baby Taubman (Wellington) did not start. Miss Wanganui (Wanganui) aud Miss Syndicate (Dunedin) retired early in the first lap. Despite a heavy southerly and rain, the event attracted a large crowd. The Marlborough craft’s second victory in the New Zealand Power Boat Championship was hailed with delighted cheers. The two-hour postponement conferred no advantage, and the water was excellent throughout the race. Stuart .Buckman drove the champion well within herself and she was never pressed aj; any stage. Pelorus Jack lapjied consistently in 3min. 25see., and the rate at which she improved her lead made it apparent that the result was a foregone conclusion. The average speed of the winner approximated 54 m.p.h. Miss Ethel and Tory Chick traversed each circuit at round about 45 m.p.h. The distance was 18 land miles, and the time, 20miu. 29sec., is regarded as highly satisfactory, especially as the winner could have improved on her performance had it been necessary.
