DAYLIGHT BAKING
Deputation to Minister of Labour AUSTRALIAN EXAMPLES A deputation from the New Zealand Federated Bakers and Pastrycooks Union of Workers waited on the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. • T. Armstrong, yesterday, to urge on the Government the desirability of bringing down legislation to eliminate the present system of night baking. The deputation contended that the only way of getting uniformity in this matter was to have instituted by law the prescribed hours between which the process of the manufacture of bread should be carried out. Illustrations were quoted to show that in Australia and some Continental countries this was already iu operation, and they saw no reason why New Zealand should be behind other countries.
New Zealand, it was pointed out, led the world at one time in social and industrial legislation, and it was hoped she would once more show how this much-needed reform could lie brought into operation. The Alinister said he would give the matter ills earnest consideration, and would no doubt bring the question before Cabinet, so that a Bill could be drafted embodying legislation, along the lines asked for.
The deputation consisted of Messrs. E. J. Watson (Auckland), F. Mawhinny (Wellington), and Air. P. Neilson, ALP. for Dunedin Central, who introduced the deputation and who also acted for the Dunedin union. Air. Neilson thanked the Alinister for the sympathetic hearing be bad given the representations.
