LAST TRIBUTES
Late Mr. E. C. Prendeville
The esteem in which Mr. Edward Charles Prendeville was held was shown by the large attendance at his funeral yesterday. At tlie Sacred Heart Basilica solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by tlie Rev. Father P. Smythe, S.M., and the obsequies at the graveside were conducted by tlie Rev. Father Cahill, S.M., and Father Cleary, S.M. Among the chief mourners were Mr. J. H. Prendeville, of the Chatham Islands; Mr. M. Prendeville. of Makara. brothers, and Mr. H. Bates, of Levin, brother-in-law. The pallbearers at the Basilica were members of St. Patrick’s Old Boys’ Football Club, for whom Mr. Prendeville acted as coach. At the graveside the pallbearers represented tlie R.S.A., the Wellington Rugby Union, the Poneke Football Club and the Prisons Department. Among those present were Mr. H. O'Leary, K.C., Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., Mr. Mclntosh, inspector of prisons. Lleut.-Colonel Evatt, Mr. 11. A. Lamb and a large number of friends, who came from Auckland and other parts of the North Island. Mr. J. H. Heginbotham Mr. Janies Henry Heginbotham, who died at Waverley on Monday, was born at Kilbirnie on September 27, ISB9, and was educated at the Kilbirnie School. On leaving school tie joined the staff of the Gear Company and was with them until the outbreak of the Great War. After being rejected for the Main Body he signed on as a member of tlie crew of the troopship Rotorua, and at the end of the voyage was discharged in London. After endeavouring to enlist on a mine-sweeper and the mercantile marine he returned to New Zealand, where he immediately enlisted in the Seventh Battery. Royal Field Artillery, and served in Egypt and in France until the end of the war. After the war he and his brother took over a business in Waverley, which he conducted until the time of his death. He was a keen member of many sports clubs of the district, especially trotting, football and gun clubs. He leaves a widow, one brother. Mr. Walter Heginbotham, of Waverley, and three sisters, Mrs. May Smith, Mrs. Q. Harper and Mrs. Gertie Bongrene, of Wellington.
