Council’s Monthly Meeting
Palmerston North, January 22.
The monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held yesterday, Cr. D. Collis presiding. The council’s representatives on the Palmerston North River Board were instructed to inquire the reason for the recent increase in the gravel royalty from 3d. to Gd. per cubic yard. On the Awahuri bridge question, the Manawatu County Council stated that it was still of the opinion that a subsidy of at least £3 for £1 should be obtained. It was decided to comply with the suggestion in the letter that when the plans for the new bridge were ready, fresh application for increased subsidy would be macle. The ranger, Mr. I. Baldwin, reported having impounded 74 head of stock since the last meeting of the council.
The following amounts were expended in the ridings to the December meeting, the balances available being given in parentheses:— Taonui Riding.—Road maintenance. £1165 (£1234) ; tarred road' maintenance, fl 3 (£304) ; plant maintenance, £l4 (£l4) ; bridge maintenance, £33 (£8); new works (Longburn-Rongotea road), nil (£933): total. £1223 (£2365). Mangaone Riding.—Road maintenance, £1246 (£1289) : tarred roads’ maintenance. £7B (£457) : plant maintenance. £l5 (£l4) ; bridge maintenance, £4l (£l6) ; pew works (Benton’s bridge), nil (£133) : total. £1382 (£1877). Kitzherbert Riding.—Road maintenance. £1245 (£1247): tarred roads’ maintenance. £1 (£6); plant maintenance. £6 (£18): bridge maintenance, £94 (£19); new works (Young’s bridge), nil (£200) ; total, £l3lB (£1452).
