PLEASURES FORGONE

Public Dedicate This Day To Their King

AMUSEMENT DEFERRED

Desirous of giving practical expression to the sorrow that lias so deeply moved them at this time of the death of their beloved King, all sections of the public are co-operating in the cancellation or postponement of entertainments and pleasures of various kinds. To-day, which is Wellington Anniversary Day, was to have been observed with the customary carnival of sports and amusements, but it has been agreed to dedicate tlie day to mourning. RACES POSTPONED The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting has been postponed until Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the annual meeting of the Ashhurst club, which was to have been held today, has been put off until to-morrow. CLOSING OF THEATRES When news of the King’s death was received yesterday, the managers of Wellington theatres and picture houses held a meeting, and decided to close all theatres, both afternoon and evening, and to-day, as a mark of respect to his Majesty. The decision was a voluntary one, and the proposal to close all theatres immediately was unanimous. The theatres will remain closed until to-morrow. SPORTS EVENTS OFF AH sports fixtures arranged for today have been postponed beca' of the death of the King. Regret at the passing of his Majesty, who was a patron of all forms of sport, and had honoured many Rugby football and cricket matches in which New Zealand teams had competed in Great Britain, was widespread among Wellington sportsmen. It was at once agreed that all events set down for to-day should be cancelled.

Wellington yachtsmen’s annual fixture, the Anniversary Day regatta, to have been held under the jurisdiction of the Royal Port Nicholson club today, was among the events postponed. As the yachting calendar for the remainder of the season is a very full one, it may yet be necessary to abandon the fixture.

The Wellington Mercantile Cricket League had intended to proceed with its grade championship fixtures to-day, but when the news of his Majesty’s death was received, it was immediately decided to postpone the matches to a later date.

The match which had been arranged for to-day between the Karori club and the Rangitlkei representative team on Karori Park has also been cancelled. The cricket matches arranged by the Kilbirnie club, on the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground, for to-day have been cancelled, and the match which was to have been played by the Wellington Ladies’ Cricket Association, on the same ground, has also been cancelled. The “Daily Mail” competition which was to have been held by the Suburbs Defence Rifle Club to-day has been cancelled.

The Shandon Golf Club has decided to close its links to-day, and consequently the tournament arranged for Anniversary Day has been cancelled. PICTON TRIP CANCELLED The Union Steam Ship Company has cancelled the excursion which was to have been made by their steamer Rangatira to Picton to-day. This will no doubt cause the speed-boat contest for the Masport Cup, which was set down for decision at Pieton this afternoon, also to be postponed. The New Zealand Club luncheon in honour of Colonel J. L. Sleeman, arranged for to-morrow, has been cancelled. The first cabaret night, which was to have been held by the Ocean View Cabaret Club, Lyall Bay, to-night, has been postponed until to-morrow. The tea dance advertised to be held at the New Majestic, Majestic Theatre, Willis Street, this afternoon, has been cancelled. The restaurant will be open for lunch and tea as usual, but will close at 7 p.m. MAGISTRATE’S COURT Procedure For the Week In respect to the memory of the late King, the following procedure has been ordered to be observed at the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, by the principal stipendiary magistrate, Mr. E.
