Plea For Retention In Taranaki

An eloquent plea for the retention of the Taranaki Scholarship fund for use in Taranaki only, which was made to the university senate by Mr. J. A. Valentine, made a marked impression on the members, but they, nevertheless, decided to refer the matter to -he executive committee to approach the Government with a view to broadening the scope of the use of the fund. The Public Trustee had-advised the Senate that the balance to the credit of this fund was over £31,000. Mr Valentine traced the history of the endowment since 1868, and said he coiilu not understand the New Zealand Lmversitv trying to filch the proceeds or these "reserves. Taranaki was entitled to enjoy the fruits of the foresight ol its pioneers. He, granted that he fund was too big. but they had proposals for using it. It would all be required in the days to conic when .1 university college was established m Taranaki. Mr. Valentine received rounds ot applause at the eud of his speech, out the members voted by a large majority for tlie retention of the clause to which lie took exception. Universities Bureau Fellowship. The senate decided to nominate Dr 11. G. Denham, professor of at Canterbury College, for a Universities Bureau Fellowship. Dr. Detih.iin proposes to visit this year the main universities in England and Scotland in which research in physics and chemistry is being actively pursued. On the motion of Mr. L. J. "'}d, it was decided that the lowering ot the a“e limit for provisional matriculation from 25 to 21 is to take effect immediately. . ~ . The senate agreed by.a majority to open its next sessions in Auckland o’ l January 21, 1937. The senate placed on record its appreciation of the long and faithful seivices of the retiring registrar. Mr. E. T Norris, and the ability, tact andcourtesy with which he had always discharged his duties. This concluded the business.
