Haulage to Wanganui RIVER BEAUTIFICATION Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, January 21. A move is being made in Wanganui to beautify the river bank between the two bridge boatsheds. Members of the Wanganui Harbour Board and City Council are to formulate a scheme. Messrs. W. Rogers and J. Patterson are representatives of the former local body. Cliain Stores. For the purpose of obtaining signatures of business men protesting against departmental stores being permitted to- carry on more than one business under the one roof, canvassers visited Wanganui to-day. They state they obtained many signatures to the petition, which will be presented to Parliament during the forthcoming session. County Motor Licenses. The number of motor drivers licenses issued by the Wanganui County Council shows an increase for the year when compared with the number of licenses issued for the year 1934-35. To date, 773 have been issued, and the year does not end until May 31.. For the previous year, too licenses were issued. Inter-district Swimming. For the purpose of deciding what competitions to hold for the cup presented by Mr. A. Stuart, of Marton, a meeting of the "Wanganui Bast Swimming Club was held last night, over which Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., presided. Three representatives of the Marton Swimming Club were also present. It was decided to hold twelve events, six at each centre, Wanganui Last to hold a programme at a carnival on February 20, and Marton to hold one later. Annual Athletic Meeting. At the annual athletic meeting with the "Wellington and Kiwi clubs, to be held at Petone Recreation Ground next Saturday evening, the following team will represent the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club: —Men: Carwell, Brandon, Wilson, McCormick, Stephenson. Darby, Leeth Chambers, Burgess, McCasbin. Collings, Dix, Wady. Simpson, Hayes and Morgan. Women: Ward, McNie. Wrigley, Atwell. Cyclists: Wade, Pidwell, Anderson, Francis, McCormack, Sullivan. Address to Maoris. At Putiki last night. Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, addressed members of tile recently-formed Wanganui Maori branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. T. Haddon, president, presided, and after a welcome, was given the speaker, Mr. Cotterill outlined the future policy of the Government in regard to the Maori race. Mr. 11. Takarangi, elder 01. the pa, declared Mr. Cotterill a memlter of bis courtyard. It was proposed to invite Mr. 11. Ratana, M.P. (Western Maori) and Mr. Ormond Wilson. M.P. (Rangitikei) to address the branch later. “Learn to Swim” Week.

Remarking upon the “Lenru to Swint week which commenced at Wanganui y?sMr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., said that it wa« splendid to sec e-o many children taking advantage of the opportunity of learning to swim. Mr. Cotterill. who is president of the Wanganui Fa«t Swimming Club and a vice-president of the "Wanganui Swimming Centre, said that on his return to Wellington he would make representations to the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, to ascertain in what direction the Education Department would co-operate in encouraging swimming in schools. He hoped that on hie return lie would be able to givj some assurance in this direction.

Revised Goods Services. Reorganisation of goods services between Wanganui and Taranaki areas is well under way, and the Railway Department will shortly introduce a more powerful locomotive than any previously operated in this" district. Probably next month an “X” class engine, built specially for hauling heavy freight trains over the steep gradients of the Main Trunk, will work between "Wanganui and Marton. These engines, when in working order, weigh 94 tons, and will be capable of hauling 215 tons over the Okoia and Wangaehu banks as compared with 175 tons, the maximum load for the “Ab” over the steepest grades between Wanganui and Marton.

M.C.C. v. Wanganui. Keen interest is being taken in the visit of the English touring team to Wanganui on January 24 and 25. A Waiiganui representative team has been chosen to play against the visitors, the match commencing' at 2 p.m. the first day and at 11.30 o'clock the following morning. Play will take place on Cook's Gardens, which are in fine order, and the prices cf admission are: Adults 1/6, children and unemployed half-price; stand and enclosure 6d., extra. After 4 p.m. admission to the ground will be 1/-, children and unemployed G<l.
