600 GIRLS WANTED
Demands of Extension of Telephone Habit MUST BE sft. HIGH Six hundred girls with silvery voices, deft fingers, and quick brains are wanted in London before next March by the G.P.0., who will train them as telephone exchange operators. More girls are also wanted in the provinces. This is because the telephone habit in Britain has grown to such an extent that recently more than 2,000,000 additional calls per week have had to be handled, as compared with corresponding periods last year. Still heavier increases are expected in 1936. “We are anxious to . get girls of secondary school education between sixteen and nineteen for the vacancies,” an official stated. “An important point is that girls must be at least five feet high. The reason is that the girls’ arms must be able to reach to the various switchboards. “They will begin at a salary of 29/a week. At twenty-one years of age each girl receives 46/- a week - , which goes up to £3/1/6 per week, with prospects of still further promotion. . “Good voices are, of course, important. . Voices should be attractive, but not affected. Oxford accents are certainly not desired. The girls should speak clearly, distinctly, and with ‘personality,’ if possible. “The new girls—who will be paid during their period of training—will be interviewed by the chief woman supervisor and given voice tests.”
