The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department has been advised by the superintendent of the Apia tadio station, as follows:— ‘Tile molor-boat Taifau with Australian ami New Zealand mails Io connect with the Monterey at Pago Pago, and 16 passengers and a crew of lour, sank 15 miles of Alcipata. "Tim captain aud three passengers reached Aleipata in a dinghy. Sixteen Samoans wore drowned, and all the mails were lost.’’ STORM IN SAMOA Native Child Killed (Received January 19. 6.30 pm.) Apia, January 17. After yesterday’s storm the wind aud rain had slightly abated this morning. The Hauraki, which was forced to put to sea, returned 'to port and loaded part of her cargo. She put to sea again to-night as the weather is still uncertain. Considerable damage was done to banana and bread-fruit trees. A native child, six years of age, was killed in the village of Salemoa when a coconut tree fell and smashed through the root' of a house. Roads ami bridges are washed out in several places in outside districts. A hurricane occurred at Keppel Island at 2.30 p.m., G.M.T. The barometer fell to 29.03, aud the wiud reached force El2. The radio station aerial is dowu. GREAT DAMAGE CAUSED Cyclone in Queensland Brisbane, January 18. Alfred Stewart, aged 35. was struck ami killed instantly by lightning near Lowood during a terrific cyclonic storm which broke over Southern Queensland. Houses iu the suburbs of Brisbane and in the country nearby were unroofed and flooded and the telegraph ,-i nd telephone services were disorganised In the Woodford district the storm tore a track for 21 miles through the bush. One half of the town of Woodford escaped, but in the other half nearly every building was damaged The roof of a hotel in the main street was lifted bodily aud deposited 100 yards away, while the Church of England was blown down.
