HUTT RIVER IN FLOOD

The Hutt River gave a good demonstration on Saturday of the speed with which it rises and falls. Very heavy rain fell over its watershed on Friday night, and at 5 o’clock on Saturday it was running bank-high at Silverstreani. Just over an hour later it was running across the road up to the footboards of motor-cars, and negotiation of the road had to be made with care. The rain having ceased at daylight and the morning breaking fine, still another hour found only the faintest trickle crossing the road, which, apart from a few pools of water, gave no sign of the flood.
