Mr. Rudyard Kipling

.Press Assn. Cable and British Official Wireless.)

Rugby, January 14.

A bulletin issued this afternoon from the Middlesex Hospital, where Mr. Rudyard Kipling was operated upon early yesterday for gastric trouble, states ihat he is maintaining bis position. Inquiries as to Mr. Kipling's condition were made to-day on behalf of the King, who was informed that he was a shade better, and that his condition was as satisfactory as could be expected in the circumstances.

Mr. Kipling's operation was for a perforated stomachic ulcer, a condition which is liable to a sudden r.’lapse, and grave anxiety was felt late to-night.

Mrs. Kipling and her daughter, Mrs. Bainbridge, saw the patient for a few moments this morning. They revisited tlie hospital this evening, but Mr. Kipling, who had been dozing fitfully, was too exhausted to speak to callers. These included the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, who is Mr. Kipling’s cousin.
