BIG CRICKET MATCH

M.C.C. v. New Zealand

To-morrow

CAPTAIN’S INJURED HAND

The brilliant form displayed by the members of the English cricket team in their matches in the South island has caused pnusual interest to be centred in their second match against New Zealand, which is to commence at the Basin Reserve to-morrow, ami will be continued on Saturday and .Monday. The members of the M.C.C. team, fresh from their dazzling display against New Zealand at,Dunedin last week-end, when they dismissed the Dominion eleven for 81 runs, aud then piled up 653 for five wickets before applying the closure, returned to Wellington yesterday morning, and will indulge in practice at the Basin Reserve at 3 o’clock this afternoon. E. R. T. Holmes, the captain, stated that the M.C.C. team for to-morrow s match would be the same as that which took the field against New Zealand at Dunedin, though there was a doubt whether he himself would be able to play, owing to having badly bruised a hand in stopping a hot ground shot at Dunedin. He hoped, however, that the injury would respond to treatment sufficiently to allow him to play. If the captain is fit and well, the English team for to-morrow’s match will be:—

E. R. T. Holmes (Surrey), captain. J. 11. Human (Middlesex). 11. D. Read (Essex). A. D. Baxter (Middlesex). 8. C. Griffith (Cambridge University).' D. Smith (Derbyshire). J. H. Barks (Sussex). IV. Barber (Yorkshire). J. Hardstalf (Nottinghamshire). J. M. Sims (Middlesex). J. Langridge (Sussex). The New Zealand Team. The New Zealand team will be:— I. B. Cromb (Canterbury), captain, H. G. Vivian (Auckland). G. L. Weir (Auckland). M. W. Wallace (Auckland). J. L. Kerr (Canterbury). A. W. Roberts (Canterbury). C. J. Elines (Otago). J. R. Lamason ( Welliugtou). D. A. R. Moloney (Wellington). ■ E. D. Blundell (Wellington). J. A. R. Blandford (Wellington). The present English team play the brightest cricket of any combination which the Old Land has ever sent t-> this country. The spectators at Dunedin were delighted with the carefree hitting of the Englishmen on Friday and Saturday last, and followers ot the game will hope that the visitors will be in the same hitting mood this week-end. Much interest will attach to the bowling of H. D. Read, the Essex amateur, whose express deliveries played such havoc with the New Zealand batsmen in the first innings at Dunedin.

Everyone will hope that the New Zealand eleven will show something like their true form, and perform in a manner which will redeem the feeble showing made at Dunedin. Play each day will commence at 11.30 a.m., and stumps will be drawn at 6 p.m. WANGANUI TEAM Match With M.C.C. Next Week
