In April, 1854, one brass lield-picce, two tar barrels (Io set alight when the Russian fleet should heave in sight), and a boat mul crew, in charge of Lieut. Phnyrcr, were dispatched to South Head for defence purposes. Phayrer's instructions were to row after any suspicious vessels. It seems that a month passed before someone laughed, and the “force” was withdrawn.
