Great Australian Damage MOTORISTS DROWNED Sydney, January 13. Damage estimated at £15,000 was caused in northern suburbs of Canberra by a cloudburst. Roads and culverts were washed away, and houses were extensively damaged. All street traffic was held up. The damage was confined to the residential areas. It is estimated that nearly lOin. of rain fell in an hour and a half. A cloudburst over the Newbridge and Trunkey districts, near Bathurst, caused widespread damage to farms, roads, bridges aud homes. The streets of Trunkey were covered to a depth of’ several feet, aud the flood waters entered many houses. Two bridgbs were washed away, and the town is practically isolated. The damage to crops is very heavy. Two men, W. 11. Philp aud J. A. Philp, were drowned when their sedan car was swept by flood waters from a causeway on the road between Young and Wallendbeen into a flooded creek, The car was carried a quarter of a mile down the creek. Following a cloudburst, the water was four and a half feet deep on the causeway when the car attempted to cross. BAD DROUGHT BROKEN Queensland Welcomes Rain (Received January 13, 8.50 p.m.) Brisbane, January 13. It is estimated that Western Queens .land lost 8,000,000 sheep during the recent drought. Whole herds Of cattle were also wiped out. Heavy rain i s now falling, and tluwhole of Queensland is receiving its most, thorough soaking for many years, making quick recovery of the grasslands certain. FLOODS IN VICTORIA (Received January 13, 8.50 p.m.) Melbourne, January 13. Rising overnight after six inches of rain, the flood along the Snowy River is up to three miles wide, and has again brought, losses to Orbost farmers. The damage in these and the Christmas floods is estimated at £50,000. Where 'the Brodribb River runs info the Snowy River, near Mario, the flood is six miles wide.
