SMASHED TO PIECES BY . FIERCE GALE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 12, 7.10 p.m.) Astoria (Oregon), January 12. The Coast-guard has reported that, the 31 members of the erev, of the freighter lowa perished to-uay when tlie vessel was smashed to pieces by a 90-mile an hour gale which disrupted shipping on this section of the Pacific coast. Early this morning the lowa wirelessed that she was in difficulty off Peacock Spit, at the mouth of the Columbia River. A Coast-guard cutler witnessed (he breaking up of the lowa, but high seas prevented it tossing over a rescue line. Mei: could plainly be seen grasping the rigging as the vessel sank. Aid is being rushed to several other vessels reported to be in distress, but it is not yet known if there are other casualties. The lowa, ex West Cadron, a singlescrew steamer of 5724 tons gross, was built in 1920 by the Western Pipe and Steel Co., San Francisco. She was owned by the States Steamship Company.
