BUSY WEEK-END
Activities at Hood Aerodrome WAIRARAPA NOTES Dominion Special Service. Mastertoll, January 13. A considerable amount of flying was carried out at Hood Aerodrome during the week-end, the three machines belonging to the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club all being in constant demand for training operations, club flying, and the transport of passengers. At 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, Plying Officer Buckeridge left for Martinborough, returning at 1.30 p.m. During thia period the machine was used for training purposes by pupils at Martinborough. Yesterday’ morning at 10.30, Mr. J. V. Reid, with Mr. A. McDonald as passenger, and Mr. A. W. Buchanan, with Miss I’. Lord as passenger, left for Martinborough. Both machines returned at approximately 11.50 a.m., Mr. Reid flying solo. Flying Officer Buckeridge conveyed Mr. A. McDonald from Martinborough to Hinakura in ZKADL. It is expected that some of the club’s machines will be taken to Palmerston North on Wednesday, to assist in the opening ceremony of Union Airways, Ltd., when Flying Officer Buckeridge will give an aerobatic display. Rifle Shooting.
The Masterton-Opaki Rifle Club’s ranges for next Saturday will be ten shots at 800 yards and two contests of ten shots each at 900 yards. Entries for the North Wairarapa handicap meeting will be accepted during the afternoon by the secretary. Coursing Club’s Meeting.
It was decided at a recent meeting of the Wairarapa Coursing Club, to hold the annual meeting on Wednesday, .March 4. A building committee was appointed and given power to erect a building for.use as a tearoom, storeroom and office. Application is to be made for the New Zealand Derby (dogs under two years), and the Oaks (hitches under two years), to be run on the 'Wairarapa course this year. Motor-cars Collide.
A collision occurred at Nix's corner on the Featherston-Morison’s Bush Road recently, between a motor-car, driven by Mr. R. C. Wilson, a dairy inspector, of Greytown. and a light motor truck. The latter vehicle, which was driven by Mr. James Johnson, was travelling from Morison’s Bush toward Featherston, while Mr, Wilson was proceeding toward Greytown. The car was extensively damaged, but the truck had only a damaged wheel and a bent mudguard. Neither driver was injured. Visit of Chess Champion.
Mr. C. J. S. Purdy, winner of the major chess congress tournament just concluded in> Wellington, and chess champion of Australia, has accepted an invitation to visit Masterton. Air. Purdy, who will arrive on Friday. January 31, has reeently concluded exhibitions at Auckland and 'Wellington, of blindfold and simultaneous play, and during his visit to Masterton he is prepared to meet local players in similar contests. Local chess players willing to co-operate in arranging matters for Mr. Purdy’s visit are requested to communicate with Air. A. Clemas, who is responsible for the visit. Anniversary Day Sports.
The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club's annual sports gathering will be held on the Masterton Park Oval on Anniversary Day. January 22. Entries for the meeting are already quite good, but it is anticipated that many more will be received. Intending competitors are reminded that entries close to-morrow. The team to represent the club in the contest at Petone on Saturday next has been chosen as follows:—Men: C. Hausmann. J. Cairns, G. Crothers, D. Brennan, J. Eastwood, C. Wyeth. D. Jackson. R. Swimming Carnival.
The Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club will conduct its first carnival of the season on January 22, when some interesting swimming should be witnessed. The programme includes the following events:—2syds. junior boys’ handicap; 25yds. junior boys’ handicap (14 years or under at October 1. 1935) : 50yds. women’s handicap; 100yds. open breaststroke handicap; 50yds. Wairarapa primary schools’ championship for’ the A. A. Wilson Cup: 220yds. open handicap; 75yds. intermediate (17 years or under, October 1. 1935) ; 50yds. inter-club handicap; women’s and men’s dives (standing or running, optional) ; 100yds. relay. A novelty event is also included on the programme.
